Police had a potential suspect in their grasp in connection with Nancy Guthrie’s alleged kidnapping. On Tuesday, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that a man was detained following a routine traffic stop south of Tucson, Arizona. Savannah Guthrie’s mom lives in Tucson, and it’s believed she was taken by force from her home.
The man simply known as Carlos was apparently stopped by police on the matter before being released hours later. Authorities did not reveal his name, but a reporter managed to track down the alleged person of interest at his home. His arrest was a complete surprise to him.
The search for Nancy Guthrie continues
By the sounds of it, the first suspect in this case is clean. That’s the suggestion, seeing as he was held, questioned and has since been released. The man who only wanted to be called Carlos spoke to reporters outside his home in Rio Rico, Arizona early Wednesday, about what he went through. “I didn’t do anything … I’m innocent,” he insisted. Carlos claims that he doesn’t even know who Nancy Guthrie or Savannah are.
Carlos alleges that he was held against his will and was not read his rights until two hours afterwards. He says that his wrists are swollen from the handcuffs. He claims that he was being followed for a while before being detained. Carlos adds that they damaged his house and thoroughly searched that and his car before eventually letting him go.
This arrest and release came a day after police had reportedly found some leads into Nancy’s disappearance. FBI director Kash Patel released photos on X near the entrance of Nancy’s home around the time it’s believed she was kidnapped. A photo of a person in a ski mask was seen.
Nancy was first reported missing on February 1, the day after going out for dinner with her daughter Annie. Savannah has said that she’s willing to pay the alleged kidnappers. They were reportedly seeking a $6 million ransom this week. Savannah has sent a couple of videos saying they’re ready to talk to the alleged perpetrators as the search for the 84-year-old continues.
