Ivanka Trump Faces Backlash for Chinese New Year Fashion Choice

Ivanka Trump is facing criticism for a recent post intended to celebrate the Chinese New Year.

The daughter of Donald Trump shared a post on X (formerly Twitter) marking the event on Tuesday. In the post, Ivanka marks the beginning of the Year of the Horse, specifically the Fire Horse. The post also included a professionally shot photo of Ivanka wearing a white blazer.

“Today, a new lunar cycle begins,” Ivanka began in the post. “The Year of the Fire Horse calls us to courage, to energy, to intention, and to fearless creation. It is a year for bold ideas, decisive action, and turning vision into something enduring.”

“I am stepping into it with clarity and conviction, ready to bring forward projects I have been quietly nurturing, ideas nearly ready to meet the light,” she continued. “I cannot wait to share them with you. Forward, with strength. With gratitude. With purpose. Excited for what is ahead.”

Then, Ivanka concluded, “Happy Lunar New Year 新年快乐.”

Many users were quick to respond about the outfit’s color in the attached photo. In Chinese culture, wearing white traditionally symbolizes death, mourning, and ghosts. White is often worn at funerals, similar to black in Western culture. Both black and white are considered no-go colors for the New Year, with red being the color most synonymous with the celebrations.

“She’s already dressed for the Republican Party’s funeral in the midterms. Thoughtful!” joked Izzy Gardon, Communications Director for California Governor Gavin Newsom.

Additionally, user @DayTradeDiane wrote, “You aren’t supposed to wear white. You’re supposed to wear bright colors, red, blue, gold.

Similarly, @peendy_Lwandle responded, “Lol why did she post a picture of herself from this?” with crying emojis. “Is everything okay.”
