Bad Bunny Lands His First Role as Lead in Historical Drama

After winning over the music industry with his stunning voice, Bad Bunny is all set to leave fans awestruck with his acting skills. If the latest reports are to be believed, the 31-year-old will star as one of the lead actors in the upcoming historical drama film, Porto Rico.

Bad Bunny to star in Porto Rico

Bad Bunny made his feature film acting debut with a supporting role in F9, the ninth film in the Fast and Furious franchise. He has since starred in several movies, including Happy Gilmore 2 and Caught Stealing. Both of these titles hit the screens last year. Now, Benito is gearing up to lead the historical drama, Porto Rico. This news has come weeks after he delivered a stunning performance at the Super Bowl Halftime Show on February 8.

Grammy-winning rapper René “Residente” Pérez Joglar will be directing the movie in his feature directorial debut. Per Deadline, Residente said, “I have dreamed of making a film about my country since I was a child. Puerto Rico’s true history has always been surrounded by controversy. This film is a reaffirmation of who we are — told with the intensity and honesty that our history deserves.”

Per the 2023 announcement from Deadline, the film will be set in Puerto Rico in the late 19th century. It will follow the life of the island’s revolutionary José Maldonado Román, known as Águila Blanca (White Eagle). Maldonado Román resisted colonial rule by organising a group of former convicts to defend Puerto Rico’s sovereignty as it struggled to define its national identity.

Labelled a Caribbean western, the film will also star Viggo Mortensen. He is best known for his role as Aragorn in the Lord of the Rings film franchise. No Country for Old Men’s Javier Bardem and Birdman’s Edward Norton have also joined the main cast. Meanwhile, multi-Oscar-winning director Alejandro G. Iñárritu will serve as an executive producer.
