Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie are reportedly “heartbroken” following the arrest of their father, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor. He was arrested yesterday (February 19) on suspicion of misconduct in a public office, and has since been released pending investigation.
The former prince’s arrest comes after months (arguably, years) of scrutiny over his alleged friendship with Jeffrey Epstein, which has ramped up following the release of files relating to the convicted sex offender.
Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice are “protecting their own children”
Commenting on Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie’s reaction to the ordeal, a source told PEOPLE they have been greatly impacted.
“They’re trying to stay away from it,” the insider claimed. “They have young children, and this is their grandfather — their focus is on protecting their own children from his.”
As well as focusing on their families, the Princesses are reportedly reflecting on past events. “They’re also putting pieces of the puzzle together in real time and realizing they may have been used,” the source said.
“That has to feel like a complete betrayal,” the insider continued. “They’re heartbroken — but a dad is still your dad, and a mom is still your mom. Love for a parent isn’t a light switch. It’s an incredibly painful and introspective moment for them.”
Speaking of Sarah Ferguson, she has been noticeably absent of late. In fact, she hasn’t been seen in public since September of last year and her whereabouts are currently “unknown.”
To that end, King Charles is the only royal to have spoken out about his brother’s arrest so far. His Majesty expressed his “deepest concern” over the news and emphasized the importance of the police investigation. “Let me state clearly: the law must take its course,” he said.
“As this process continues, it would not be right for me to comment further on this matter,” the monarch added. “Meanwhile, my family and I will continue in our duty and service to you all.”
