Conan O’Brien is speaking for the first time since the tragic deaths of two of his good friends. Rob and Michele Reiner were stabbed to death at their Brentwood home on December 14. Their son Nick was with them the night before their deaths. He’s currently on trial for allegedly murdering the couple.
According to the former late-night talk show host, he became increasingly close to the Reiners over the years. He called Rob and Michele wonderful people while expressing shock and grief over their deaths.
Conan had the pair over the Saturday before their deaths, and like many, never could have imagined what was to follow.

Months after their deaths, Conan admits that knowing his festive event was the last he’d see of Rob and Michele is truly surreal. Conan held a Christmas party at his Los Angeles home on December 13. Rob Reiner, Michele, and Nick were in attendance. Rob and Nick reportedly had a heated argument, making things very awkward for Conan’s other guests.
“It’s just so awful,” Conan shared in an interview with The New Yorker about Rob and Michele’s deaths. He admits that it’s still hard for him to process today, especially given how vocal Rob was about the state of the US prior to his death.
The Princess Bride director had voiced concerns about the direction the country was going under President Donald Trump. Following his death, Donald blasted the late Hollywood director, calling him delusional, among other things. This sparked major backlash.
The upcoming host of the Academy Awards says he was in awe of Rob for what he achieved in a short time. He made seven movies in roughly a decade, something Conan called a nearly impossible feat.
Conan says Rob influenced his generation tremendously. He was in college when Rob performed in the movie This Is Spinal Tap. He called that movie a “splitting-the-atom moment” for him.
The Oscars he hosts will take place on March 15.
