Despite the freezing temperatures at the Winter Olympics, Donald Trump landed himself in hot water over comments he made about the US women’s hockey team. Now, a hockey hall of famer has branded the US President a “liar” and a “fraud” over his behaviour.
Dominik Hasek paid tribute to the female US hockey team
To recap, the US men’s hockey team won gold at the Winter Olympics over the weekend. It was the first time the team had won gold since 1980, prompting a major post-game celebration in the locker room.
During that celebration, FBI Director Kash Patel downed a bottle of beer (sparking his own backlash) and called Trump. While on the phone, Trump invited the men’s hockey team to the upcoming State of the Union address – and made discouraging comments towards the women’s team at the same time.
“I must tell you, we’re going to have to bring the women’s team, you do know that,” he said. Trump then added that if he didn’t also invite the women’s team, he “probably would be impeached.”
Despite that, the US women’s hockey team turned down the invite due to “timing” and other engagements. This prompted celebration from some people on social media, including hockey legend Dominik Hasek.
“Much respect to these women,” he said on X in response to the rejection.
“Your president is a big liar and a fraud who abuses his position to insult and bully his fellow citizens,” he added. “Still, I believe you must have shown a great deal of heroism in making this decision. Thank you for that.”
“Respect to the team for standing by their principles. A White House visit is symbolic, but their message matters more,” agreed @aproko_units.
