Actress and pop star Hilary Duff is speaking out in her own defense about Ashley Tisdale’s Toxic Mom Group essay. The writeup, which went viral after it was published on January 1, put a spotlight on Ashley’s famous friends in the group.
Ashley Tisdale’s essay left Hilary Duff feeling “used”
On the February 25 episode of Alex Cooper’s Call Her Daddy podcast, Hilary addressed Ashley’s Breaking Up With My Toxic Mom Group essay.
Although the High School Musical star didn’t specifically name names as far as who was in the mom group, there was much speculation online. Fans could decipher the women Ashley and her children spent time with.
When asked about her first reaction to the essay, Hilary told Alex, “I felt really sad. I honestly felt really sad. I was, like, pretty, pretty taken aback and felt just, like, sad.” She then added that it “came at the craziest time where I was like, the timing felt not great and I felt used.”
Hilary added, since she became a mom, her friend group had changed. “So I think I just was like, ‘Whoa,’ ” the mother of four added. “It sucks to read something that’s, like, not true. And it sucks on behalf of, like, six women in all of their lives.”
Hilary also discussed her husband Matthew Koma’s critical response to Ashley’s essay. His writeup was titled, When You’re The Most Self Obsessed Tone Deaf Person On Earth, Other Moms Tend To Shift Focus To Their Actual Toddlers.
Saying she was not aware of her husband’s response prior to it being publicized, Hilary added, “Honestly, everything he does makes me laugh. So I was like, ‘Oh my God. Oh my God.’ But I also don’t censor him, and I don’t tell him what he can and can’t post. He is so, like, fierce for me, and, like, I love him for that.”
Hilary is releasing a new album this week, her first in 10 years. She is also preparing for a world tour later in 2026.
