Harry Styles is reflecting on a tragedy which still affects him today. In 2024, Liam Payne died after falling from a third-floor balcony at an Argentine hotel.
His death shook every one of his former One Direction bandmates, including Harry. The Grammy Award-winning singer explains why losing Liam was especially hard for him. “It’s so difficult to lose a friend who is so like you in so many ways,” shared Harry in a recent interview. His comments come just days before he prepares to release his fourth solo album.

Losing a loved one or close friend is incredibly painful and something that can impact one for a long time. Whenever Harry saw Liam, he admits “I saw someone with the kindest heart who just wanted to be great.” In his interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, Harry discusses what he took away from his former bandmates’ passing saying it taught him to live “your life to the fullest.”
Liam’s death, according to Harry, was a message to him about how quickly and suddenly death can come. As such, he vowed not to take any moment for granted and live his best life. He says that coming to grips with Liam’s passing was something he struggled with for a long time.
While One Direction broke up years ago, Liam’s death seems to have healed some old wounds within the band. Louis Tomlinson said in January that the group is “closer” since the tragedy.
Harry has a busy rest of the year ahead of him. His new album Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally comes out on Friday. He is also preparing for his third solo tour in support of the album later this year. The Together, Together tour kicks off in Amsterdam on May 16th, before concluding in Sydney on December 13th.
