Donald Trump spoke about his son Barron while addressing Lionel Messi during a White House event honoring Inter Miami CF for winning the 2025 Major League Soccer championship. During the remarks, Trump performed an impression of Barron while recounting a conversation about Messi’s presence at the ceremony. He told the audience that Barron alerted him to Messi’s attendance at the White House.

Trump began the event by introducing Messi to those gathered. He said, “And it’s my distinct privilege to say what no American president has ever had the chance to say before: Welcome to the White House, Lionel Messi.” The president then shifted to discussing Barron’s interest in soccer and the player.

While recounting the exchange, Trump altered his voice to imitate Barron and described the moment his son mentioned Messi. He said Barron asked, “Dad, you know who’s going to be there today?” Trump replied, “No. I’ve got a lot of things going on,” before saying Barron responded with a single word: “Messi!”

Trump addressed Messi directly and explained Barron’s admiration for the footballer. He said, “He’s a big fan. He’s a big fan of yours.” Trump added, “He thinks you’re just a great person, and I think you got to meet a little while ago.”

Trump also referenced Cristiano Ronaldo while continuing his remarks about soccer players admired by Barron. He said, “Cristiano [Ronaldo] is great. You’re great, some big champions, some great, great athletes, in that sport.” The event marked a White House celebration for Inter Miami after its championship win.

Messi attended the ceremony with Inter Miami teammates after the club defeated the Vancouver Whitecaps 3-1 in December to win the 2025 MLS championship. The visit was Messi’s first trip to the White House in Washington, D.C.
