Former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem publicly thanked President Donald Trump just hours after he announced her firing from the Cabinet position. The South Dakota governor’s removal from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is an unexpected shakeup in Trump’s administration as immigration remains a top priority for the White House.
Kristi Noem posts thank you note for Donald Trump
Shortly after news broke that Donald Trump fired Kristi Noem, the former secretary took to X to express gratitude toward the president. Noem thanked Trump for appointing her as the “Special Envoy for the Shield of the Americas,” a new role that shifts her focus away from domestic homeland security matters to international concerns.
“I look forward to working with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to dismantle cartels that have poured drugs into our nation and killed our children and grandchildren,” Noem wrote in her post.
The former DHS chief emphasized the strategic importance of her new position, stating that “the Western Hemisphere is absolutely critical for U.S. security.” She noted that her experience over the past 13 months would serve her well in the new capacity. “In this new role, I will be able to build on the partnerships and national security expertise I forged over the last 13 months as Secretary of Homeland Security,” she added.
Despite her firing, Noem used her farewell message to tout what she described as “historic accomplishments” during her tenure at DHS. According to her statement, the department under her leadership achieved milestones, including “the MOST secure border in American history,” with 3 million illegal aliens leaving the U.S., locating 145,000 children, and delivering FEMA disaster relief at a 100% faster rate. She also claimed her team “saved the American taxpayer $13 billion and revitalized the U.S. Coast Guard.”
Trump’s frustration with Noem reportedly had been building for some time. Lawmakers and people familiar with the discussions told NBC News that while Trump was already displeased with her, the performance at two congressional hearings this week ultimately cost her the job.
