Elisabeth Hasselbeck Details ‘Awkward’ Queen Elizabeth II Meeting

If you’re going to meet a member of the royal family, it’s a good idea to do a little research first. Just ask Elisabeth Hasselbeck – the TV host had a pretty cringe encounter with Queen Elizabeth thanks to a big faux pas. Elisabeth recounted the awkward incident on The View.

Elisabeth enjoyed a brief return to The View for a week-long co-hosting gig. On the March 7 episode of The Weekend View, she recounted the time she met Queen Elizabeth II.

The TV personality was invited to attend a White House state dinner back when George W. Bush was president. Unfortunately, the royal encounter didn’t exactly go to plan.

Elisabeth said: “I had so much static electricity, I was so nervous. I had no idea what to do when I got there.”

Clearly her nerves got the better of her, as she did the unthinkable. She explained: “I went in for a hug—it didn’t go well. It was very awkward when I went in there.”

The over familiar greeting wasn’t the only slip up Elisabeth made during the event. She also managed to confuse a fingerbowl with a drinking glass. She shared: “I remember this chalice of something. I’m mid-sip and Jeb Bush leans over, Condoleezza Rice is at my other side, and he’s like, ‘You might not want to drink that. That’s for your hands.’”

Royal protocol is a big deal for the monarchy – so much so that Kate Middleton recently told fans she’s not allowed to sign things. However, she and Prince William apparently let things slide at Prince George’s christening. According to a royal expert, the pair opted not to follow the usual protocol when celebrating their first son’s milestone.
