In the interview, Conan O’Brien sat down to discuss why he agreed to host the Oscars. In the course of the session, the conversation turned to something somber when the Reiners were brought up.
The Hollywood Reporter reported that Rob and Michele Reiner were at O’Brien’s party with their son, Nick. O’Brien addressed the tragedy in the interview. He highlighted that the focus should remain on the family’s loss, not on the media attention surrounding the party.
He told The Hollywood Reporter, “Very simply, we had a party, we invited our really good friends and then, the next day, this terrible thing happened.” O’Brien added, “Whatever difficulties my wife and I have experienced having our name attached to it are nothing compared to the scale of the tragedy for the family and the loss of Rob and Michele.”
Additionally, O’Brien reflected on the unfortunate incident. He said, “If you’re a known person, your name is going to get dragged into things sometimes.” However, he emphasized, “but it is not a hardship,” adding, “There is only sadness that they’re gone.”
Furthermore, The Hollywood Reporter piece explained why O’Brien avoided discussing the deaths on his own podcast. It stated that he thought bringing it up in his own space would have come across as disdainful.
The report highlighted Conan O’Brien’s holiday party with friends, where Rob and Michele Reiner showed up with their son, Nick. Then, the next day, the couple’s tragic deaths turned into a case that became global news.
