Britney Spears’ Ex-Husband Sam Asghari Says Singer Is ‘Oppressed’ Amid Arrest Drama

Britney Spears’ ex-husband has spoken out following her arrest last week. Commenting on his former wife’s DUI, Sam Asghari said he thinks Britney is “oppressed” and taken advantage of. He also offered support for Britney, to whom he was married for 14 months.

Appearing on Wednesday’s episode of Piers Morgan Uncensored to discuss the current war in his native Iran, Sam also spoke on Britney’s arrest.

“Coming from the country of Iran and seeing women being oppressed, that’s something that stuck [out] to me,” he said. “In a way … she was also oppressed by many people who took advantage of her and sort of had the same experience as women do in Iran.”

Sam, who described himself as “an advocate for women’s rights,” added that “it was hard to see that someone in America was being oppressed.”

To recap, Britney was arrested on March 4 in California on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs. “This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable,” a representative for the singer told the BBC afterwards. “Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law. Hopefully this can be the first step in long-overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life.”

Since her arrest, fans and celebrity friends alike have shared their support for the singer. Meanwhile, others have expressed concern, with some even suggesting she should be placed under a conservatorship again.

Nonetheless, Sam said he thinks what Britney needs most is privacy. “I’m a strong believer that she needs her privacy, and everybody makes mistakes,” he explained. “If she made a mistake, I really think she’s a strong woman, and she could come back from this.”
