Dementia hasn’t completely taken over Bruce Willis. The Die Hard star retired from acting in 2022 to focus on his health. His wife, Emma, took the opportunity to update fans on his condition.
By all accounts, Bruce is hanging in tough despite his debilitating disease. Emma says the former action star is “still very much present in his body.” Bruce was diagnosed with aphasia in 2022. The disorder typically damages an area of the brain which controls your language and comprehension.
Bruce Willis is celebrated by wife Emma Heming on his 71st birthday

It seems like Bruce’s debilitating condition hasn’t completely paralyzed him mentally. Although he’s lost his verbal capabilities, Bruce still “has a way of connecting with me, our children,” Emma said to RadarOnline. She acknowledges it’s not the same way others might connect with their loved ones, but it’s still very beautiful. Bruce turned 71 on Thursday.
Emma has been the subject of much controversy since her husband’s illness. Last summer it was revealed that the Armageddon actor lived in a separate home from her and the kids. She made the decision to give Bruce the necessary care while allowing their daughters to have a more normal, less restrictive home life.
In addition to posting throwback pictures to celebrate his birthday, Emma also made a plea to people. The actress and model is encouraging others to donate to the Emma & Bruce Willis Fund. She created this charity to raise awareness for Frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Funds for that cause will support research on that condition.
For Emma, her husband’s disease has taught her and the kids to adapt to his reality as one way to remain connected to him. The couple have two daughters, Mabel and Evelyn, born in 2012 and 2014, respectively. A year after his aphasia diagnosis, doctors discovered he was also suffering from progressive and incurable FTP.
