Donald Trump Focuses on Windmills While Meeting Irish PM

President Donald Trump ranted about windmills during a meeting on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, at the White House in front of a visibly awkward Taoiseach Micheál Martin. The US President has long opposed the sustainable energy source, and has once again claimed that China, the world’s largest producer and consumer of wind energy, does not use windmills.

President Donald Trump burst into a monologue about windmills during a meeting with Ireland’s Taoiseach, Micheál Martin, who allegedly had a hard time controlling his laughter. Trump met Martin at the White House on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, to commemorate St. Patrick’s Day.

Triggered by a question from U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Trump launched into a monologue about windmills, prompting Martin to struggle to contain his laughter, per observers (via OK! Magazine).

“Windmills all over the country, destroying those gorgeous Scottish fields,” the President said. He went on to repeat a factually inaccurate claim that China, the world’s largest producer of wind energy, does not use wind turbines.

“Windmills, which don’t work, uh, they’re tremendously expensive, and the best testament to that is the windmills are made in China, but China doesn’t use them,” he said, “I’m proudly telling you that we’re going to try and have no windmills built in the United States during my term.” He further claimed that windmills were the “worst” and “most expensive” form of energy.

Trump added, “They’re very bad environmentally, they kill the birds, they’re unsightly, they make a lot of noise, and for some reason, the environmentalists love windmills.” At this point, observers noted that Martin was struggling to suppress a laugh.

This is not the first time that Trump has expressed his animosity toward windmills. He once engaged in a legal battle to prevent a wind farm from being built near his Trump International Golf Links resort in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. He also spoke out against windmills in the past.
