A planned state visit to the White House for King Charles and Queen Camilla at the end of April might be in trouble.
Previously, Donald Trump hinted at plans regarding the King’s visit to the U.S., in time for the country’s 250th anniversary. A reigning monarch hasn’t paid a state visit to the country since 2007. However, the new report claims that the wait may be even longer.
Could King Charles’ US visit with Donald Trump be cancelled?
A palace official told Page Six that “all trips are subject to government advice.” Additionally, the source said “planning and preparation continues,” before plans will be officially announced.
Charles and Camilla will reportedly visit New York City as well as Washington D.C. during the planned trip. However, the visit will be only three days long, due to the King’s ongoing cancer treatment, per doctor’s advice. Page Six reached out to Buckingham Palace for a comment, but were not provided with one.
Trump’s escalating war with Iran has been a point of tension for both nations. Earlier this week, he criticized British Prime Minister Keir Starmer for his lack of support. In a press conference, Trump remarked that the UK was once considered the “Rolls Royce of allies,” for the U.S.
A successful visit from the head of state could potentially help ease Trump’s current animosity towards the country. The last time Charles and Camilla visited America was back in 2015, eight years before they would be coronated King and Queen, respectively.
Another factor in the planned U.S. visit could be the King’s brother, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor. The former Prince was arrested on February 19, on suspicion of misconduct in public office. The investigation and any subsequent trial involving Andrew may see the Royal Family duck out of public view for some time.
