Will Smith’s infamous slap on Chris Rock wasn’t the only shocking thing that happened at the 2022 Oscars. Liza Minnelli is dishing on what transpired behind the scenes that night. The Academy Award-winning actress was slated to present the Best Picture award alongside Lady Gaga.
Liza was there to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Cabaret, which won her a Best Actress Oscar in 1972, one of eight golden statuettes for the movie. However, Bad Romance singer Lady Gaga apparently had her reservations about going on stage with Liza.
Lady Gaga allegedly suggested Liza Minnelli be taken home

Lady Gaga evidently couldn’t keep a poker face around Liza. In her new book, called Kids, Wait Till You Hear This, the EGOT winner opened up about what transpired backstage at the 2022 Oscars.
Minutes before air, Liza claims that she was told she couldn’t sit in a director’s chair. She says that Lady Gaga insisted she go out in a wheelchair or that she might be better off going home.
What followed, according to Liza, was the Just Dance singer’s apparent concern for Liza’s mental state. Liza claims that she quizzed her about her memory, asking what movie was being honored that night and the character she played.
Liza then alleges that she was pushed so low on stage that reading the teleprompter was a struggle. This, in her mind, led to audiences believing she was mentally diminishing.
In her book, Liza writes that Lady Gaga was “widely praised for this seemingly gentle gesture, which came at my expense.” She says she never got an apology for that moment.
The multiple Grammy Award winner is not the only celebrity Liza calls out in her memoir. She also dished about a nightmare experience working with Gene Hackman. Liza and the French Connection actor starred in the film Lucky Lady.
Liza’s new memoir is available now.
