Ryan Gosling Claims Steve Carell Gave Him ‘Trauma’

Ryan Gosling confesses to having an unexpected wig “trauma” because of Steve Carell. Gosling and Carell have worked on two major feature films together: Crazy Stupid Love and The Big Short. The 45-year-old actor is on a promotional spree for his new movie, Project Hail Mary, and recently featured as a guest on Late Night With Seth Meyers.

Ryan Gosling reveals he has wig trauma because of Steve Carell

Ryan Gosling discloses he has a wig “trauma,” all thanks to his previous co-star Steve Carell. In Project Hail Mary, Gosling plays a science teacher, Ryland Grace, who goes to space. During his recent appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers, the host shared a still from the film, where Gosling’s Grace wakes up from a years-long coma aboard a spaceship. In the image, he can be seen sporting long hair and a full beard to channel the authenticity of the character.

When Meyers showed Gosling the photo, he exclaimed, “Oh my God. I call him the space caveman… you know, I don’t do this a lot. I have a little bit of trauma because I went for it a bit on this film, The Big Short.”

For those unversed, Gosling featured in the 2015 Oscar-winning film The Big Short alongside Carell. The Barbie actor portrayed the character of Jared Vennett, a Deutsche Bank executive.

To make his character more authentic, Gosling swapped his dirty blonde hair for black for the role. The La La Land star narrated, “And I stepped out in my wig and costume and I ran into Steve Carell, who was the first person I saw. He just stared at me and said, ‘Never do this again.’” The Canadian actor joked, “I never spoke to him again.”

Previously, the actors participated in a joint interview in 2015 with ABC, where they recalled the wig encounter. The Fall Guy star told Nightline’s Chris Connelly, “Putting on the wig… I felt like, ‘Oh I got this.’ And then I walked out of the trailer, and I saw Steve.”

Carell added his own two cents, saying, “Such a horror show. He’s such a good-looking human being, and he could not have looked creepier.”
