To coincide with the 20th anniversary of the iconic Disney series Hannah Montana, Starbucks is coming out with a special drink — but fans of the show are all saying the same thing.
Titled “Secret Popstar Refresher”, the drink is a Strawberry açaí with a raspberry cold foam. However, viewers of the Miley Cyrus-led series pointed out that Hannah (or Miley) could never be represented like that. The proof is in one classic episode of the show.
Hannah Montana fans are furious with the flavor choice
In the season 1 episode “Smells Like Teen Sellout,” Hannah is asked to promote a raspberry-scented perfume. However, Miley, AKA the girl behind Hannah, has hated raspberries since childhood. A memory of a raspberry pie-eating contest that made young Miley throw up was traumatic. In the episode, Hannah/Miley has to decide on whether to take the deal or try to get over her raspberry trauma.
Hannah gags at the scent every time the perfume is sprayed. Even an attempt at shoving her head in a bowl of raspberries with a snorkel fails to fix Hannah’s fears. However, in the end, she decides to remain true to herself and her fans and say no to the perfume deal.
Then, fans quickly picked up on the issue, and it spread rapidly online, once Starbucks made the announcement. For example, on X (formerly Twitter), @kellyjj16 posted “Hannah Montana if she tried her raspberry drink today,” with a video attached of Hannah being repulsed by the perfume.
“It’s literally canon that Hannah Montana hates raspberry so much that it makes her gag,” @groovybmovie similarly responded.
For the 20th anniversary, Starbucks will also play Hannah Montana songs all day in its stores. However, the main celebrations will be on Disney+, where Miley will revisit the show that turned her into a superstar.
