Warner Brothers has recruited talk-show host Stephen Colbert to pen a new Lord of the Rings movie. The studio’s official X (formerly Twitter) shared the announcement with the caption, “In honor of Tolkien Reading Day and the destruction of the One Ring, we bring you a special announcement.”

The video opens with director Peter Jackson sharing a quick update with fans about the next film in the franchise: Andy Serkis’ The Hunt for Gollum. Jackson heaped praise on Serkis and revealed the project is “looking amazing” and that it’s “going to be a really good film.”

Jackson then teased their next film after The Hunt for Gollum with a “very special partner.” The next instant, a mysterious new person appeared on screen, his face covered with a big book. The mysterious figure puts the book down and reveals himself to be famous talk show host Stephen Colbert. The new film is titled The Lord of the Rings: Shadows of the Past.

Colbert confessed he is “pretty happy” to be penning the next movie in the Lord of the Rings franchise. The 61-year-old expressed to Jackson, “You know what the books mean to me, and what your films mean to me.” As per Colbert, the film will cover six chapters from the book that did not make the cut into Jackson’s 2001 adaptation, The Fellowship of the Ring.

The talk-show host explained that he is working with his screenwriter son, Peter McGee. Together, they worked out a “framing device” for the film. The duo has extensively collaborated with screenwriter Philippa Boyens to develop the script.
