It’s rather unusual for an elected official to have a frequent heckler, but NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani handles the chaos like a true New Yorker.
At a press conference in Bedford-Stuyvesant, the Mayor launched a new affordable housing program titled Neighborhood Builders Fast Track. The bid will attempt to pre-qualify affordable housing developers, helping significantly shorten the time it takes to build new housing. However, Raul Rivera, a pro-driver activist and regular critic of Mamdani’s, didn’t seem to be such a fan of the project.
Raul Rivera regularly heckles the NYC Mayor
Although much of Raul’s heckling wasn’t audible on film, Mamdani embraced the disruption.
“I want that man to be able to afford to keep living in New York City,” the Mayor told the audience at the press conference. Rather than request for the man to leave, Zohran explained why his presence was a good thing.
“The day that I don’t hear him yelling at me, it means he got priced out of this place.”
“And I don’t want that!” Mamdani added. “I don’t want that for him, I don’t want that for anybody in this city.”
Then, the young politician added, “We need to make this a city where it’s affordable enough to yell at your politicians. If it’s not that city, it’s not a city I want to live in. Let’s be clear on that.”
As of Thursday, March 26, Mamdani is on the 85th day of his first 100 days as Mayor of New York City. As for Raul, he is a regular at the politician’s public engagements. Previously, he’s been spotted brandishing a flag bearing Donald Trump at several political events.
During his election campaign, Raul yelled at Mamdani to renounce Islamic law, after Mamdani said Israel was engaging in a “genocidal war” against Palestinians. The heckler has also popped up at events for other major NYC politicians.
