Donald Trump has always been a purveyor of celebrity gossip — so it’s perhaps no surprise that he has some thoughts to share on John F. Kennedy Jr.
The late businessman and attorney’s fiery relationship with his wife, Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, has been of renewed interest. The Ryan Murphy-produced FX series Love Story focuses on the couple’s inner lives and final moments before their tragic deaths in July 1999. The couple, alongside Carolyn’s sister Lauren Bessette, died when their plane, piloted by John, crashed into the Atlantic Ocean.
The President spoke of the couple’s volatile relationship
During his interview with Fox News’ The Five series, the president was asked about his thoughts on the biographical series.
“I actually knew him and liked him, and he liked me, believe it or not,” Trump said during the interview. Additionally, Trump pointed out the late Kennedy heir apparent “actually put me on the cover of his magazine.”
JFK Jr. founded George magazine — a lifestyle magazine with a focus on American politics and history, named after George Washington. However, there’s one issue with his claim. Trump appeared on the cover in 2000, and JFK, along with his wife and sister-in-law, died in July 1999.
It’s not the first time the president has exaggerated his relationships with famous figures. Earlier this month, he admitted he liked to tell people he had met Elvis Presley. However, he revealed in his visit to the late star’s Graceland home that he had actually never met him.
Trump went on to claim that the couple had visited his famed Florida estate. “They would go down to Mar-a-Lago together, and they had a very interesting relationship,” he said. He went on to characterize their relationship as tumultuous, to say the least.
“They would bicker together, in other words have little fights,” he added. “and then they would make up and start kissing wildly.”
