The first teaser for HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series dropped recently and gave fans a look at Paapa Essiedu-led Professor Snape. In a new interview with Esquire, the 35-year-old British actor opened up about an accident while filming Quidditch scenes on the set.
Snape actor Paapa Essiedu on embarrassing Quidditch filming moment on Harry Potter set
During his chat with Esquire, Paapa Essiedu called the production design for the Quidditch set design, a mix of green screens and animatronics, “completely insane.” He also shared an embarrassing on-set accident he got into while filming one of his Quidditch scenes. Revealing that the creators built an entire stadium for the scenes, he said that he noticed wires while in one of the scenes where Harry was flying.
Essiedu continued, “Then I had to do mine, and my broom was on the end of this big mechanical arm. I was doing it, and it’s not particularly comfortable, but whatever. Then I fell off, and I was hanging off my broom.” He said he was three feet off the ground before adding, “The thing that was actually humiliating about it is that nobody laughed. Everyone had a poker face. Being in a room of silent staring people as you’re hanging off a broom is not a good vibe.”
Elsewhere in the interview, the Gangs of London actor shared that he is a huge fan of the books penned by J. K. Rowling. He explained, “I grew up reading the books, and I was the same age as the characters. I was a real kid of the generation where people were queueing up at Waterstones, so I’ve got a very visceral memory of feeling connected to that story.”
While Essiedu has not watched the Harry Potter movie series, he said that he feels lucky to get the chance to show an expanded version of the books. The show, titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, will premiere on HBO and HBO Max on December 25.
