Donald Trump Administration Sues Minnesota Over Trans Athletes in Girls’ Sports

The Donald Trump administration has filed a lawsuit against Minnesota over transgender athletes competing in girls’ sports. The lawsuit also states that the inclusion of transgender athletes in girls’ sports might harm them. Minnesota previously filed a preemptive lawsuit against the Trump administration over the same subject.

Minnesota sued by Donald Trump administration over transgender athletes

A lawsuit was filed against Minnesota by the Donald Trump administration for allowing transgender athletes to compete in girls’ sporting events. According to a report by The Guardian, the Department of Justice has claimed in the lawsuit that the state is violating Title IX. This federal law prohibits gender-based discrimination in educational programs or activities that receive federal funding.

The 45-page lawsuit states that the policies in Minnesota “create unfair competition, deny girls equal educational opportunities, and expose girls to a hostile educational environment with heightened risks of physical injury and psychological harm.” The Justice Department, in its statement, further alleged that the Minnesota government is making girls “compete against boys in athletic competitions” in sports that are meant to be for them. The DOJ also stated that the aforementioned policies are permitting what it calls an invasion of “intimate spaces” such as washrooms and changing rooms.

In his reply, Keith Ellison, the AG of Minnesota, described the lawsuit as an attention-grabbing stunt by Trump. According to NBC News, he also asserted that the President is trying to “target, shame, and harass children” who are just being themselves.

Attorney General Pam Bondi also took to her X (formerly Twitter) account to address the lawsuit. She wrote, “Today @TheJusticeDept sued the state of Minnesota for allowing boys to play in girls’ sports and use girls’ locker rooms. This DOJ acknowledges biological reality, and we refuse to let high school girls be subjected to this treatment. It’s not only unfair — it’s deeply inappropriate and dangerous. Proud to partner with @SecKennedy and @EdSecMcMahon on this important litigation.”
