Stephen Colbert Jokes Donald Trump’s Speech ‘Brought the Nation Together’

Veteran late-night talk show host Stephen Colbert almost tricked his audience into believing that he was praising the President in his latest monologue before switching back to his usual self. The 61-year-old entertainer cleverly made use of April Fool’s Day to mock Donald Trump by satirically describing his recent speech as “concise” and “intelligent.”

On the April 1 episode of his talk show, the Primetime Emmy awardee took a jibe at the Republican President by bestowing fake compliments upon his Wednesday address.

“It was concise, intelligent, and brought the nation together with shared purpose,” Stephen Colbert relayed. Struggling to keep a straight face as he sarcastically appreciated Donald Trump’s speech, Stephen Colbert almost immediately broke character and remarked, “April Fools!” on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

“Trump gave his speech tonight, on the first night of Passover. So, whether you’re Jewish or not, I recommend having had four glasses of wine,” Stephen Colbert remarked as he continued to tear down Donald Trump’s speech.

The Comedy Central alum also revealed that he didn’t get the chance to catch the President’s speech, as he and his team had to “tape the show a little before 6 o’clock.” However, there was another reason why he ended up missing the address. “I put lamb’s blood around my TV, so the speech would pass me by,” Colbert quipped.

Notably, April 1 marked the first time that Trump had given a national speech in primetime since the commencement of the Iran war. He spoke for an estimated 19 minutes and emphasized that “core strategic objectives” in the Middle Eastern conflict “are nearing completion,” as per the White House.

The businessman-turned-politician then issued a threat against Iran, noting that the US military intends to hit the country “extremely hard over the next two to three weeks.” Trump doubled down on his aggressive stance, adding, “We are going to bring them back to the Stone Ages, where they belong.”
