Donald Trump’s Easter Sunday post on Truth Social left US politicians scrambling for words, and some of the most pointed reactions came from unexpected corners. The president and several lawmakers addressed one of the week’s most alarming moments in American politics.
US politicians call out Donald Trump’s new threat to Iran
Donald Trump issued an expletive-laden threat to Iran on Easter Sunday, demanding the country reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Trump posted on Truth Social: “Open the F***in’ Strait, you crazy b******s, or you’ll be living in Hell – JUST WATCH!” He also threatened to target Iran’s power plants and bridges on Tuesday.
The Strait of Hormuz has been closed since the US and Israel launched war on Iran in late February. Iran’s deputy communications official, Mehdi Tabatabaei, said Iran would only reopen the strait after receiving war damage compensation. He added Trump had “resorted to obscenities and nonsense out of sheer desperation and anger.”
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Trump was “ranting like an unhinged madman on social media.” He added that Trump was “threatening possible war crimes and alienating allies.” Independent Senator Bernie Sanders called the post “the ravings of a dangerous and mentally unbalanced individual” and demanded Congress act immediately to end the war.
Former Republican congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, once a Trump ally, said everyone in the administration “has gone insane.” Greene wrote that Trump’s threats to bomb power plants and bridges “hurts the Iranian people.” Senator Chris Murphy suggested Cabinet members consult lawyers about invoking the 25th Amendment to declare Trump unfit for office.
The war has now killed more than 3,500 people across the region. US strikes destroyed Iran’s largest bridge last Thursday, killing eight people and injuring 95. Democratic representative Jake Auchincloss told Fox News Sunday that “strategically, this war has been a failure.”
