Vice President JD Vance had an unexpectedly awkward moment during a rally in Hungary. His attempt to call Donald Trump live on stage turned uneasy when it went straight to voicemail. The brief hiccup played out in front of thousands.
JD Vance gets voicemail as he tries to call Donald Trump
The incident happened on April 7 in Budapest at the “Day of Friendship” event, where JD Vance appeared to support Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. Trying to energize the crowd before his speech, Vance teased a surprise. “Before I started my remarks, I actually had a special guest that asked that I give him a phone call,” he said. Then, half-jokingly, he added, “Let’s hope he actually answers. This is going to be very embarrassing.”
Seconds later, that’s exactly what happened. The call went straight to voicemail. “OK,” Vance said, pausing as the crowd reacted. He quickly tried again, adding, “Let’s try one more time. I got to get a good signal here.” The second attempt worked. After a few seconds of waiting, Vance smiled and said, “Hello Mr. President, how are ya?” — drawing cheers from the audience. He then told Trump, “Mr. President you are on with about 5,000 Hungarian patriots and I think they love you even more than they love Viktor Orbán.”
Once on the line with JD Vance, Donald Trump addressed the crowd and spoke of Orbán’s leadership. “He’s a fantastic man, we’ve had a tremendous relationship… Remember this, he didn’t allow people to storm your country and invade your country like other people have, and ruin their countries frankly,” Trump said.
“He’s kept your country good… He’s done a fantastic job and let me tell you, I like him a lot but if I didn’t think he did a good job I wouldn’t be making a call like this,” he added, also calling himself a “big fan of Viktor” and saying the U.S. is “with him all the way” (via CNN).
