Coco Gauff is breaking her silence amid the criticism of her new look. The tennis star has gotten her share of backlash over her hair lately. Many people believe her style looked unpolished or undone. Many felt it looked unprofessional for a luxury fashion campaign.
Despite the haters, Coco is owning her new look and is happy about how it turned out. “I’m not going to apologize for the way that my hair looked,” Coco declared.
The tennis star appeared in a new Miu Miu ad
Despite the backlash, Coco isn’t backing down or expressing regret about her look. In the Miu Miu ad, she wore a red polo shirt and a skirt and carried a leather bag. She also wore her natural hair in a bun, which seemed to garner most of the attention. Coco shared that the shoot took place in her parents’ backyard with her and her social person involved. In response to some of the criticisms, Coco said, “That’s their aesthetic. I love the Miu Miu aesthetic.”
While many didn’t like the look, Coco said many people have also complimented her on it. She notes that there are girls with hair just like hers. Coco adds that she wanted those people to feel represented and to know that their hair is fine as it is.
In the past, Coco has admitted to having issues finding and believing in herself. In March, she said she sometimes felt like she might have “imposter syndrome.” At the time of those comments, she had made the semi-finals of the Miami Open. At 22, she became the youngest female American to do so since Serena Williams in 2004.
Coco admits that plenty of the criticisms against that ad bothered her. She hopes that in the future, people can be a little less judgemental to others.
