Donald Trump Makes Major Appeal to NYC Court Over ‘Fraud’ Case

President Donald Trump has appealed to overturn a major fraud penalty against him and his real estate business. Letitia James, the New York attorney general, filed this case earlier, accusing the president’s company of misstating the values of its properties for years, misleading banks and insurers. Last year, the appeals court believed that the decided penalty, with interest, was too high, so it was eventually reduced, and his business was still fined with certain restrictions.

Donald Trump calls on NYC court to toss a case against him

Donald Trump had called on the NYC court to remove the restrictions on his business and overturn the remaining ruling, as his legal team states that it was not legally strong but politically motivated. They mention that the case is based on wrong facts and arguments.

The 119-page appeal requested the court to “put an end to this legally deficient case.” They further wrote, “The reason here was pure politics, as Attorney General James’s own statements make clear.” James’ legal team has yet to submit a response to the appeal (via Politico).

In 2024, Trump was ordered to pay more than $354 million in a major fraud trial ruling, whereas his sons were each asked to pay $4 million, roughly, as per The Independent. The lawsuit revealed that to gain financial backing, Trump and his business showcased incorrect property values. A judge named Arthur Engoron gave a final judgment after a months-long trial, holding Trump, his sons, and associates liable for fraud.

Trump and his business were let off with a $500 million penalty, as the judges considered it to be too high an amount with interest. Therefore, it was reduced, and certain restrictions were imposed. The first rule disabled Trump and his sons, Donald Jr. and Eric, from serving as officers of a New York business for up to three years. They were also not allowed to take loans from banks in the city for the same specified period. At the time, Trump was not cleared of fraud, and now he wants to overturn what remains of the ruling.
