Governor of California Gavin Newsom’s wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, has come under fire for an old video, wherein she expressed concerns about young and impressionable boys “moving to the right” due to excessive internet surfing. The year-old clip seems to have resurfaced of late, with several netizens blasting the First Partner of California for her comments.
Jennifer Siebel Newsom criticized over resurfaced video
During her May 2025 appearance at the Common Sense Summit on Kids and Families, Gavin Newsom’s wife shared a lengthy account of how spending more time on the internet is developing right-wing ideology in boys.
“We all know, I think, or increasingly are realizing that boys are moving away from sort of the more progressive — boys that spend time online are moving a little bit — I’m trying not to be political here — but are moving to the right,” Jennifer Siebel Newsom said at the event. “[They’re] being sort of influenced by the Andrew Tates and some of that sort of alt-right socialization online that we know is very, very dangerous.”
Jennifer then revealed that her son recognizes Andrew Tate and even had a conversation about him with her Republican father, before describing the situation as “scary.”
Moreover, the 51-year-old noted that her husband’s administration had been “working on legislation” to prevent the youth from going “down this rabbit hole of very, very dangerous and limiting narratives around ultimately what it means to be girl and what it means to be a boy.”
With the clip resurfacing online after almost a year, several netizens have criticized Jennifer Siebel Newsom for her statements. “This woman is scary, and she needs keep talking. The control she is talking about is very 1984. Maybe if she talks enough, people will start to see what liberals really stand for,” wrote one user, as per Fox News. Another critic noted, “The Newsomes are hardcore communists who continually work to divide our nation.”
However, a statement by the Newsoms’ spokesperson read, “There are corners of social media, including self-described misogynists, that are normalizing the disrespect of women, which in turn can shift into harassment and violence towards girls and women. The First Partner was referencing that we must hold tech companies accountable for ensuring the safety and well-being of children, who are engaging with a lot of this content.”
Meanwhile, Gavin Newsom and his wife have yet to comment personally on the video or her past comments.
