We might not see Pope Leo return to his home country anytime soon. The Chicago-born Pope appears to be at odds with many of Donald Trump’s actions. Among his supposed problems with the President are his attacks against Iran.
In his annual address to the diplomatic corps this year, Leo spoke about the importance of international and humanitarian law. On July 4, the Pope’s birth country will mark its 250th anniversary. Leo, however, seemingly has no interest in attending the festivities.
A Vatican official is allegedly speaking out
It doesn’t appear as though Pope Leo ever wants to meet Trump. Following the Pope’s address, The Free Press reports that the Department of Defense invited Cardinal Christopher Pierre to the Pentagon. Christopher was the Pope’s personal representative to the US at that time. Vatican officials describe the meeting as a “warning that the United States has the military power to do whatever it wants.” They apparently deemed the meeting as a threat that “the Church had better take its side.”
Both Vatican and American officials believe the pontiff’s January address was a direct attack on the President’s policies. The Donroe Doctrine are apparently among the contentious issues that the Pope has with the President. That is Donald’s update of the Monroe Doctrine, which calls for American control of the Western Hemisphere.
In February, Leo declined an invitation from the President to serve on his Board of Peace. Many American allies aren’t members of this board, including Canada and the UK. Many of the President’s critics have accused him of attempting to usurp the United Nations’ powers.
A Pentagon spokesperson claims the meeting earlier this year was respectful and reasonable. They believe those who suggest otherwise are greatly exaggerating what allegedly transpired. Leo is the first Pope born in the US to hold that high honor.
