The true identity of best-selling author Freida McFadden has been revealed! Although the writer of The Housemaid has always been honest about using a fake pen name, she has finally opened up about her real name … and her surprising secret career.
The author is also a doctor who treats brain disorders
Speaking to USA Today, The Housemaid author revealed that she’s actually named Sara Cohen, rather than Freida (more on why she chose the pseudonym in a moment).
“I’m at a point in my career when I’m tired of this being a secret,” she explained. “I’m tired of people debating if I’m a real person or if I’m three men. I am a real person, and I have a real identity, and I don’t have anything to hide.”
Elaborating on the reason she has stayed anonymous until now, Sara said this was to protect her line of work. Away from being a bestselling author, Sara is a doctor who treats brain disorders. In fact, a hospital training registry (named the Fellowship and Residency Electronic Interactive Database) even inspired her pen name.
Following the stratospheric successes of her recent novels, like The Housemaid, which has been made into a blockbuster movie, Sara has now stopped working full-time as a doctor. “I have stepped away from my job,” she said. “I’m only working like once or twice a month.”
“I just realized I was completely overwhelmed from trying to do both,” the author slash doctor went on.
As for whether anything will change now that she’s been “unmasked,” Sara reassured fans there’s nothing to worry about. “Even though I haven’t told my real name until now, I feel like I have shared the real me all along,” she said. “The name will be a surprise, [but] nothing else will. I’ve always been genuine with my readers.”
