This December, eligible men between 18 and 25 years old will automatically be registered for the U.S. military draft pool. Previously, men self registrated into the Selective Service System (SSS).
The SSS government agency’s database lists eligible men who can serve the country in a national emergency. Last December, Donald Trump signed the fiscal 2026 National Defense Authorization Act, mandating automatic SSS registration.

The SSS website states, “We are part of America’s National Defense Strategy, fostering deterrence through innovation and supporting the Department of War’s priority to maintain a formidable end-strength that provides America’s all-volunteer force with the overmatch necessary to deter, compete and win in the future.”
The fiscal 2026 National Defense Authorization Act allocates $31.3 million to the agency. Designed to save time and money, this change “transfers responsibility for registration from individual men to SSS through integration with federal data sources,” the website states.
The last U.S. military draft occurred during the Vietnam War in 1973. However, President Jimmy Carter brought back the SSS in 1980. The registry can “provide personnel to the Department of War and alternative service for conscientious objectors, if authorized by the President and Congress” in a national emergency.
The Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs will review the act prior to finalization, The Hill reports.
This news comes on the heels of a two-week ceasefire on America’s war in Iran. Trump wrote on Truth Social that ships, aircraft, and military personnel remain in Iran until a “real agreement” is reached. “If for any reason it is not, which is highly unlikely, then the ‘Shootin’ Starts,’ bigger, and better, and stronger than anyone has ever seen before,” he continued. “
