Melissa Gilbert’s Defense of Husband Timothy Busfield Leads To Warning From Expert

Actress Melissa Gilbert is adamantly defending husband Timothy Busfield from child sexual abuse charges, possibly to her detriment. The Thirtysomething star allegedly abused twin boys between 2022 and 2024 on The Cleaning Lady set.

Following a grand jury indictment, Timothy pleaded not guilty to the charges. According to his attorney, the allegations are “fundamentally unsound.”

The actress “portrays herself as enabling,” according to the expert

During Melissa’s April 6 Good Morning America appearance, she said emphatically, “No one knows him better than I do. I know literally everything about him.” Then added, “I trust him with my children’s lives, with my grandchildren’s lives, my nieces and nephews. He is an honorable, caring, generous human being.”

Melissa noted the situation has been “the most traumatizing experience of our lives” and that their former life is over.

Shari Botwin, author of Stolen Childhoods: Thriving After Abuse, told OK! that statements like Melissa’s may not only keep survivors quiet but also lead to public criticism. “There are several pitfalls that come with celebrities who go public defending their spouses when accused of crimes like child sexual abuse.”

In this case, she says, “celebrities speaking up on behalf of their spouses reinforces the message that family loyalty takes precedence over the truth.” Statements like this also portray the spouse as an enabler or silent colluder, Shari adds.

“Melissa Gilbert is all over the place with her volatile reactions. Since she is a Hollywood celebrity as well, she makes news in her own right,” forensic psychiatrist Dr. Carole Lieberman told OK!. “Even though she may be trying to protect him — and their children — her statements are not helpful to his case. Emotion-laden defensive statements tend to make courts and the general public more suspicious that there is indeed something to hide.”

Also, if the couple’s statements aren’t consistent, more questions may arise, Shari explains.

Timothy’s trial is scheduled for May of next year.
