A new book has provided insight into Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip’s marriage in the later years of their life. Writing in the new biography, titled Queen Elizabeth II, Hugo Vickers suggested that the pair had “effectively separated.”
A new book makes shocking claims about the late monarch

In biographer Hugo’s new book, he uses insider accounts to paint a picture of the Queen’s life behind closed doors. In particular, he details her marriage and how this changed once Philip stepped back from public duties in 2017.
After doing so, Philip moved to Wood Farm on the Sandringham Estate, while the Queen remained primarily at Buckingham Palace and later Windsor Castle to carry out her duties. This physical distance meant the once-close pair lived pretty separate lives for many years … but that didn’t dampen the love they shared.
“Their lives had become increasingly independent even while their bond remained intact,” an insider told Radar Online of this time period. “It was not a formal split, but more a reflection of how they chose to live in later life.”
“There has long been an understanding within royal circles that their relationship evolved into something more distant in practical terms, even if emotionally they remained connected,” another source agreed.
The couple’s separation – for lack of a better word – didn’t last long, however. They were reunited during the COVID-19 pandemic when they entered isolation together at Windsor, forming HMS Bubble.
Just over a year into the pandemic, in April 2021, Philip passed away. And, the Queen wasn’t too far behind him. She made it through her Platinum Jubilee the following year, but died in September 2022. Her Majesty’s death certificate lists “old age” as the sole cause of her passing. But who’s to say she didn’t die of a broken heart after Philip left?
