Gary Player recently spoke to the media ahead of the first round of the tournament at Augusta National, offering his stance on Tiger Woods’ recent DUI arrest. He said, “Do I blame him for taking medicine? Hell, no. He has sleep deprivation. Do I blame him for taking something to help him sleep? No. But I don’t think he should drive a car.”

Explaining why Woods should avoid being behind the wheel under the influence of medication, he said, ” When you’re taking that medicine, it’s dangerous when you’re driving a car, same as it’s dangerous when you look at your cellphone in the car.” During his arrest, authorities reported that Woods had two white pills in his pocket, which they identified as hydrocodone, which is generally used to treat pain.

Moreover, he hopes that things get better for Woods. “My heart goes out for him. There’s nothing worse than living in pain every day of your life. You can’t think of anything worse,” he added. Woods recently took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce his hiatus from golf to come back stronger and healthier, personally and professionally. “This is necessary in order for me to prioritize my well-being and work toward lasting recovery,” he wrote. Following the break announcement, the PGA of America also announced that Woods had turned down the opportunity to lead the US team in the Ryder Cup 2027.
