Olivia Munn Reflects on Parenting Challenges During Breast Cancer Journey

In a new interview, Olivia Munn explained what it was like parenting kids while battling breast cancer. While raising two small children with husband John Mulaney, Munn says her breast cancer treatment forced her to come to face a parenting moment that broke her heart. Now, as she continues recovering and returns to work, Munn says she values the ability to be there for her kids in ways she missed when she could not do so before.

Olivia Munn recalls ‘hardest’ parenting challenge during breast cancer journey

Olivia Munn spoke with PEOPLE at the “Your Friends & Neighbors” press junket on Tuesday, where she talked about parenting kids with John Mulaney while struggling with breast cancer.

Speaking of what family life looks like now, she said, “John and I and our two kids hung out at the house all day, and hung in the yard, and went to the beach, and we just did every single thing together,” explaining why those ordinary days matter so much to her.

She said, “And you can see how much our children need to just be our little family together, and have both parents there at the same time.” Munn added that they need to go through “the mess together, and making all of the meals and everything that you have to do in a day,” revealing, “We just all do it, just the immediate family.”

Munn and Mulaney share son, Malcolm Hiệp, and daughter, Méi June, whom they welcomed via gestational surrogate in September 2024. They married in July 2024 in New York, with Sam Waterston officiating.

Munn revealed in March 2024 that she had breast cancer, and credited Mulaney for holding everything together during treatment, as she told PEOPLE that going through it without him “would’ve felt like climbing an iceberg.”

Olivia Munn said parenting her kids after the surgery brought a painful limit. She recalled Malcolm asking her to lift him, telling PEOPLE, “And I said, ‘Oh, I can’t pick you up,'” adding, “That was probably one of the hardest things because all you want to do is pick up your baby.”

Now, Munn is cancer-free and enjoying the little moments with her family — something she implies no one should ever take for granted.
