A public-favorite journalist could be eyeing a run at Donald Trump’s job. Don Lemon seems to have polarized many Americans. The political commentator says that he’s open to running for President.
Don’s criticisms of the current government on his show have drawn the attention of the Trump administration. He was arrested in January for alleged conspiracy to deprive rights and interfering with religious freedoms. This came following an anti-ICE protest he was covering in Minneapolis. He was arrested in a Los Angeles hotel lobby while covering the Grammys.
Could the former CNN employee become POTUS?
It sounds like Don believes in his abilities to run the US. On Wednesday’s episode of Sherri, hosted by actress Sherri Shepherd, Don discussed a potential run for President. “Why not?” he teased. He added that he’s entertaining that possibility. Don believes that if Donald Trump can get in, then maybe he can too.
As for his potential strategy, the former CNN journalist says that he’d rely on advisers and humble himself in a way the current POTUS cannot, in his eyes. In early April, Don declared that he would “run the country better” than the current President.
Throughout 2026, Don and the Trump administration have been at odds. The Department of Justice put the journalist on notice not long before his arrest. The POTUS has referred to him as a “sleazebag” and “washup” without an audience.
For his part, Don has called on other news journalists to fight back against the President and his administration. Many people have spoken out in support of Don since his arrest, calling it a clear violation of the First Amendment. The President’s top adversary in the 2024 election, Kamala Harris, called the arrest an “affront to rights and freedoms.” It remains to be seen when Don’s upcoming trial will commence.
