Prince Harry opens up about feeling ‘disconnection’ in the early days after son Archie’s birth
On April 15, Prince Harry spoke at a Movember event focused on fatherhood (via PEOPLE). For those unversed, Movember is a Melbourne-based global charity that spotlights men’s health issues and raises awareness about prostate and testicular cancer, as well as mental health and suicide prevention.
The 41-year-old revealed that he went to therapy before he and his wife, former actress Meghan Markle, welcomed their children. During the discussion with Movember’s global director of men’s health research, Dr. Zac Seidler, he said, “Certainly from a therapy standpoint, you want to be the best version of yourself for your kids. And I knew that I had stuff from the past that I needed to deal with and therefore, prepare myself to basically cleanse myself of the past.”
Prince Harry further said that before Archie’s birth, his therapist advised him to “just be aware of how you feel once the baby is born.” He explained that he felt a “disconnection” in the early days of his son’s birth. “My wife was the one creating life, and I was there to witness it,” he said.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle also share a daughter, Princess Lilibet, whom they welcomed in 2021. At the Movemeber event, the prince assured fathers that they are “not alone” in the parenthood journey. He said, “To the dads and soon-to-be dads: yes, it’s messy. You’ll have a rollercoaster of emotions — and don’t judge yourself.”
Citing Movember’s “revolutionary” work, he expressed hope that it will “give anyone the confidence to know however you have been feeling, however you are feeling, is replicated in the vast majority of individuals.” He also encouraged more fathers to be open about how they feel.
