Kate Middleton reportedly faced one of the strangest courtships in modern royal life long before becoming Princess of Wales. As per a new expert view, dating Prince William meant balancing private feelings with public pressure, future expectations, and the unusual reality of being close to the late Queen before formally meeting her.
That early strain mattered because it shaped how Kate Middleton later handled royal life. The same report said Queen Elizabeth stayed cautious at first, then gradually became an important guide. In turn, Prince William’s future wife learned how to manage duty, public encounters, and the weight of a role tied to the monarchy’s future.
Kate Middleton’s experience dating Prince William must not have been easy, claims expert
As per the Mirror report, former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond said Kate Middleton’s position was uniquely difficult from the start. “It must be the most extraordinary, nerve-racking experience to be dating the Queen’s grandson, a future King,” Bond said. She added that Catherine was Prince William’s girlfriend for “the best part of seven years” before she formally met Queen Elizabeth. Bond also noted they had attended William’s Sandhurst passing-out parade earlier, yet “they hadn’t formally met.” That detail, by itself, showed how carefully managed the relationship remained.
Meanwhile, Bond said the late Queen initially kept a measured distance. She described Queen Elizabeth’s attitude toward Prince William’s future wife as “distinctly cautious.” However, that changed once the monarch believed the relationship was serious. Bond said the late sovereign “grew to like and admire Catherine.” The report then linked that trust to the Princess of Wales’ steady public style.
Bond said she learned from the Queen “about the dignity of the role, the duty that comes with her status.” She also learned how “to smile and engage with thousands of strangers,” knowing each meeting would stay with them. In addition, the article said that the bond later deepened into guidance and mutual respect. Kate Middleton publicly recalled valuing the late Queen’s love of simple things. She also remembered gifting her a jar of homemade chutney and noticing it “on the table” the next day. Bond further said Elizabeth offered advice, including on handling “headstrong husbands.”
