President Donald Trump alleged, without evidence, that Virginia’s redistricting elections were fraudulent, after voters narrowly approved a measure that could alter the state’s congressional map ahead of the midterm elections.
Donald Trump reacts to Virginia elections
The ballot measure passed with 51.45 percent of voters in favor and 48.55 percent opposed, according to Virginia election results tallied on April 21. The outcome may reshape Virginia’s representation in the U.S. House of Representatives in a manner that many deem could benefit Democrats.
Trump responded on TruthSocial the following day. “A RIGGED ELECTION TOOK PLACE LAST NIGHT IN THE GREAT COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA!” he wrote. He added, “All day long Republicans were winning, the Spirit was unbelievable, until the very end when, of course, there was a massive ‘Mail In Ballot Drop!’ Where have I heard that before – And the Democrats eked out another Crooked Victory!”
The Virginia result comes amid an evolving national fight over congressional maps ahead of the midterms. Control of the US House depends on winning at least 218 seats in the 435-member chamber. However, the outcome is subject to potential legal review.
The state Supreme Court permitted the vote to proceed but indicated it could examine challenges to the referendum’s introduction and the clarity of its ballot language. Trump also criticized the wording, stating he “had no idea what … they were talking about in the Referendum, and neither do they! Let’s see if the Courts will fix this travesty of “Justice.”
Moreover, the results of Virginia’s elections are being closely watched nationwide as both parties prepare for the upcoming midterms. Redistricting, which means the process of redrawing electoral boundaries, can significantly affect which party wins seats in the US House. Democrats have argued the move counters Republican-led redistricting efforts in other states, while Republicans have raised concerns about fairness and transparency in the process.
