After weeks of speculation, Mike Vrabel brought his fourth-quarter calm to the podium for something bigger than draft boards or defensive schemes. The moment was about accountability, family, and a scandal that went beyond football. The New England Patriots head coach has revealed what he plans to do next amid the ongoing Dianna Russini scandal.
Patriots’ coach Mike Vrabel reveals his plans amid Dianna Russini scandal
The controversy began in late March when photos surfaced of Patriots coach Mike Vrabel and former NFL Athletic reporter Dianna Russini together at an adults-only resort in Arizona.
“As I said the other day, I promised my family, this organization, and this team that I was going to give them the best version of me that I can give them. In order to do so, I have committed to seeking counseling, starting this weekend,” Vrabel said, addressing the scandal on Wednesday. “This is something that I have given a lot of thought to and is something I would advise a player to do if I was counseling them.”
“I have always wanted to lead by example, and I believe this is what I have to do to be the best husband, father, and coach that I possibly can be. This is not an easy thing for me to admit, but it is one that I know will make me a better person. I appreciate the support that everyone has given me and promise a stronger resolve as a result,” he added, per ESPN.
On Tuesday, Mike Vrabel spoke to the media for the first time since the New York Post released photos appearing to show him embracing and holding hands with former Athletic reporter Dianna Russini. He called it a “personal and private matter” and said he has “had some difficult conversations with people I care about — with my family, the organization, the coaches, the players.”
Though absent from the team, Vrabel said he will remain in contact with the New England Patriots during Saturday’s final day of the draft. He further expressed full confidence in Eliot Wolf and Ryan Cowden to lead the draft room.
