Shakira’s upcoming concert is now in question. While setting things up for a show featuring the Latina icon in Brazil, one staff member lost their life. One crew member was reportedly crushed while trying to prepare the stage for the big festivities on Sunday.
The Colombian singer was scheduled to perform at the Todo Mundo No Rio. First responders reportedly provided care at the scene before the individual was taken to the hospital.
The worker “suffered crushing injuries” and later died
More details are emerging about Sunday’s sad news in Rio. The fire department was called in and freed the man who’d been trapped. Unfortunately, “the technician passed away in hospital,” said concert organizer Bonus Track in a statement. Crews reportedly worked for weeks to get the stage ready for this concert. The stage is located on the sands of the famous Copacabana beach in Rio. “A worker suffered crushing injuries to his lower limbs in a lifting system,” the state fire brigade confirmed to People.
A witness, Antonio Marcos Ferreira, was on the beach when the weekend tragedy took place. He said that he suddenly saw people rushing towards the area when the structure was on the ground. Event organizers have said they are providing any assistance possible for the company; it’s team, and the victim’s family.
For her part, Shakira had teased the concert on Instagram the day before. She holds several Guinness World Records for her shows, which have sold out countless dates during her past tours. There’s no word yet on whether her May 2 concert in Rio will go ahead.
Sunday’s tragedy wasn’t the first time a highly anticipated concert in Brazil got negative publicity. In May of last year, a bomb threat was made at a concert being headlined by Lady Gaga. The singer admitted that she was not aware of it at the time.
