Laurie Metcalf is dishing on a former sitcom co-star. The 70-year-old played Jackie Harris on the program Roseanne in the late 80s and early 90s. She and the show’s star, Roseanne Barr, won Emmys for their work on the program, which originally ran for nine seasons.
The show underwent a revival, with a 10th and final season in 2018. The show was cancelled after Roseanne put out a controversial tweet comparing then-President Barack Obama’s advisor Valerie Jarrett to an ape. Laurie recently opened up about the show and its star.
Laurie hasn’t spoken to Roseanne in over a decade

There appears to be no animosity towards Roseanne on Laurie’s part. Although the pair haven’t spoken in close to a decade, Laurie tells The New Yorker that “There’s nothing controversial. We just haven’t spoken since we said goodbye at the end of the reboot.” The final episode of the reboot came out in May 2018. She isn’t the only cast member who’s been estranged from Roseanne. Last year, John Goodman, who played her on-screen husband Dan on the show, said that he and Roseanne haven’t talked for about “seven or eight years.” He doubts she’d ever talk to him again.
As for the show’s cancellation through Roseanne’s actions, the Scream icon said, “I don’t even know how to answer that.” ABC called Roseanne’s tweet “abhorrent” and “repugnant.” In September, Roseanne blasted the network for what she called a double standard. This came after Jimmy Kimmel came back despite his controversial remarks over slain political activist Charlie Kirk.
After the revival’s cancellation, Laurie joined The Conners along with John and Sara Gilbert among others. That show ran on ABC for seven seasons from 2018 to 2025. Roseanne’s character was killed off with an opioid overdose.
At the time of Roseanne’s cancellation, Laurie says she was performing in the play Three Tall Women in New York City. She got word about the show’s axing on the news.
