Donald Trump’s Old ‘I Love Hispanics’ Post Resurfaces on Cinco de Mayo

A decade-old tweet from Donald Trump has taken over the internet as the United States celebrates Cinco de Mayo. The resurfacing of the tweet serves as a reminder of the president’s long-contentious relationship with Hispanic communities, especially amid his immigration tactics.

Donald Trump’s old Cinco de Mayo tweet resurfaces

On May 6, 2016, Donald Trump posted a photo of himself smiling above a taco bowl at his Trump Tower desk. “Happy #CincoDeMayo! The best taco bowls are made in Trump Tower Grill. I love Hispanics!” the caption read. The post, shared to both Facebook and X (formerly Twitter), got backlash during a campaign defined by Trump’s pledge to “build a wall” along the southern border. Trump Grill still lists a Southwest Taco Bowl for $25, described on its menu as featuring classic Tex-Mex flavors.

A decade later, the photo has resurfaced on X to polarized reactions. “Can’t believe it’s been 10 years since this banger,” one user commented. Another responded, “What you love is yourself. That’s it. Full stop.” A third user talked about the taco bowls available at Trump Tower: “I concurr! We’ve tried them ourselves, and the best Taco Bowls are INDEED made at Trump Tower! We’ve got the best of everything, folks. Even #Tacobowls.”

The old Cinco de Mayo tweet came up amid Trump’s second-term immigration policy, which had mass deportations via Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Additionally, the president promised on the campaign trail to “carry out the largest domestic deportation operation in American history.”

Now, the White House observed Cinco de Mayo this year with an AI-generated photo posted to X, captioned: “Happy Cinco de Mayo to all who celebrate!” It shows Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries wearing sombreros and holding margaritas at a table with chips, salsa, and a placard reading, “I love illegal immigrants.” A border checkpoint is also in the background.

second photo featured a mugshot of a man bearing the word “ARRESTED” and the phrase “CINCO DE PORTED,” and the Taco Bell slogan “LIVE MÁS,” alongside a small White House illustration. These are the latest additions to the administration using AI to mock the opposition.
