Paying tribute with heartfelt words, Jane Fonda opened up after the passing of media giant Ted Turner, looking back on the years they shared together and the mark he left on her life. Jane Fonda broke her silence with a lengthy Instagram statement one day after Ted Turner’s death was announced. The actress, who was married to the CNN founder from 1991 to 2001, described him as “a gloriously handsome, deeply romantic, swashbuckling pirate.” She said Turner changed her life in ways she never expected and helped her develop more confidence in herself over the years.

Fonda explained that one of the strongest parts of their relationship was how open Turner was about needing emotional support. “To be needed and cared for simultaneously is transformative,” she wrote. She also praised his intelligence, humor, and strategic thinking, saying he taught her more about nature, wildlife, business, and even history than anyone else in her life.

The actress also reflected on Turner’s environmental work and conservation efforts. She imagined him being welcomed “at the pearly gates” by animals he helped save from extinction, including wolves, bison, and black-footed ferrets. Fonda additionally mentioned Turner’s five children, calling them “talented” and saying she still loves the extended family they built together despite the challenges that came with their marriage.

In recent years, Fonda continued speaking positively about Turner in interviews. During a 2023 appearance on the Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend podcast, she said Turner’s sense of humor helped her become more comfortable being funny herself. The couple also co-founded the Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Power and Potential in 1995 (via EW).

Turner’s death comes eight years after he publicly revealed his Lewy body dementia diagnosis in 2018.
