So You Think You Can Dance Gets Sad Update at Fox

Aspiring dancers won’t have a popular Fox platform to show off their stuff. The network recently announced its lineup for the upcoming 2026-26 TV season.

So You Think You Can Dance (SYTYCD) was a longtime staple of the network’s reality shows, running for 18 seasons. In 2024, however, it came to an end amid speculation about poor ratings, production changes, and other controversies. There was hope that the show wasn’t officially cancelled, and the hiatus might soon be over. One of those near the top of the Fox TV food chain weighed in on the program recently.

Fans of the show got some disappointing news from Fox. SYTYCD will not return to your TV screens in the upcoming seasons. Variety was among the outlets on hand to hear Michael Thorn discuss it all. “It’s obviously a really important show in the history of Fox, but right now there are no plans to order another season,” said Michael.

While it’s not happening now, the door for the show to return doesn’t appear to be completely closed. Michael added that there have been talks about bringing the show back, but “nothing formal” for now.

While the program was a mainstay on Fox for years, it came with plenty of backlash throughout its run. It previously took a two-year break due to COVID. Matthew Morrison was canned from the show after failing to follow the production protocols. Panellist Nigel Lythgoe also walked away under a cloud of controversy following two sexual assault lawsuits against him. Jojo Siwa wound up taking his place.

The last season of the show was very different from what viewers were used to. For the first time, it featured documentary-style chronicles of the contestants’ journey. The series featured weekly dance challenges. This simulated the realities of a successful dance career. SYTYCD spawned several versions in other countries while capturing its share of Emmy Awards.
