Just months after the US and China engaged in an intense geopolitical tussle regarding tariffs, Donald Trump has landed in the Asian country with the hopes of improving the two nations’ business relationships. Upon his arrival, the Republican Party leader received a zealous welcome from the Chinese officials, as well as hundreds of children, who showcased great enthusiasm while greeting Trump.
Donald Trump gets grand welcome in China
On May 13, Trump set foot in China and shook hands with President Xi Jinping for the first time in nine years. The two world leaders had come face-to-face with one another on six occasions before their Wednesday link-up, with their last meeting in China coming all the way back in November 2017.
The US president was received by Xi’s vice president, Han Zheng, when he ascended onto a red-carpet tarmac after deboarding Air Force One. In addition to Zheng, about 300 children greeted Donald Trump by singing a welcome song and jumping up and down in excitement. While some kids held bouquets at the venue, others waved US and Chinese flags as Trump interacted with the crowd.
Donald Trump later met with President Xi Jinping, shaking his hands right outside China’s Great Hall of the People. After their historic encounter, both leaders walked the red carpet together to greet the delegates from each other’s countries on the steps of the Great Hall.
According to the New York Post, Trump later lauded the warm welcome he received from the Chinese kids, telling Xi, “Those children were amazing,” inside the Great Hall.
A host of US government officials accompanied Donald Trump on his trip to China, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, War Secretary Pete Hegseth, and more. Several business moguls also arrived in China alongside the president, including Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, and Apple CEO Tim Cook, among others.
