Donald Trump doesn’t appear to be keen on patching up relations with the UK. The President has often talked about how sour the US relationship with its NATO ally has become, while firing shots at Keir Starmer time and again.
Both men have their differences with one another, which each have mentioned in the past. Aboard Air Force One this week, the POTUS said that Keir is “in a lot of trouble.” The President believes the PM’s stance on energy and immigration are among the reasons why.
That, and of course, the potential leadership challenge Keir is facing at home, within the ranks of his own political party.
President Trump thinks Keir Starmer needs to “stop with the windmills”
President Trump doesn’t appear keen to extend an olive branch to the UK anytime soon. His suggestion is that the Keir open the North Sea, calling it “a gold mine,” while adding that he needs to be tougher on immigration. He says the UK could prosper tremendously if Keir focused more on oil drilling and “stop with the windmills.” Before criticizing many of the British PM’s actions, President Trump did say he is “a nice man.”
This is another chapter in the stalemate between the two leaders. Last month, Keir admitted he was “fed up” with the President who’d been slamming them for not helping in the war against Iran.
In January, Keir slammed the POTUS after the latter said that British troops stayed a little behind in the war in Afghanistan. He felt the President should apologize. President Trump, himself, previously admitted that relations between the UK and the US were not good.
While the President declined to comment on whether Keir should quit, he’s taken his share of subtle shots at the PM and Britain before. When King Charles visited in April, he jokingly said the UK could have helped the US during the Iran crisis.
Last month, Keir said he wouldn’t give in and join the war efforts despite the hate the President was giving him. There have been calls for Keir to quit, a stark contrast to July 2024, when the Labour Party won the general election in a landslide.
