Gwyneth Paltrow on Raising Kids as Single Mom & Why Acting Took a Backseat

Gwyneth Paltrow opened up about putting her acting career on the “back burner.” In a recent interview, she revealed that her work took a backseat because she was a single mom. For those unversed, the actress has two children, Apple and Moses, with her ex-husband, Coldplay’s Chris Martin. After their divorce in 2016, the 53-year-old took a break from acting and focused on raising her kids and running her company, Goop.

Gwyneth Paltrow admits to putting acting on ‘back burner’ as single mom raising 2 kids

Gwyneth Paltrow was raising two kids when she decided to put her acting career on the “back burner.” In an interview with Savannah Guthrie on “The Today Show,” the Hollywood star explained the reason behind it.

“I put acting on the back burner largely because I was a single mom and I was raising, you know, two kids, and a lot of times doing a film can take you away from home for weeks or months at a time and hours are not that friendly for taking someone to school or picking them up,” she said.

Therefore, the “Iron Man” star decided to take a break from her acting career to focus on two important roles. First, it was of a single mother raising two children, Apple and Moses. She shares them with her ex-husband, Chris Martin. Secondly, the diva also focused on running her lifestyle and wellness brand, Goop.

Meanwhile, she returned to the entertainment world with the 2025 hit “Marty Supreme.” The Oscar-nominated movie also starred Timothee Chalamet in the lead role. Paltrow told Guthrie that she decided to make her comeback to films because her children had “abandoned me and gone to college.”

Moreover, the entrepreneur agreed with the interviewer that she has now become an “empty nester.” While she “struggled” without her kids in the house, Paltrow also knew it was something that would happen. “It’s what you hope will happen, that they go off to their next phase of life and they find their people,” the mother of two said.
